This article was personally written by the staff of Allee-Holman-Howe Funeral Home. All timelines and depictions of this day were gathered from news articles and some may vary depending on the source. We ask that on the tribute wall you leave a memory of where you were on this day or what thoughts/feelings coursed through your body as you heard the tragic news. Let us never forget the lives lost on this day. On a clear, seemingly normal Tuesday morning in New York City, one of our great nations most catastrophic events took place. September 11, 2001 will forever be remembered by those all across the nation as a day of infamy. At 7:59 a.m., 92 people board American Airlines Flight 11 departing from Boston’s Logan International Airport in route to Los Angeles, California. Fifteen minutes later, at 8:14 a.m., United Airlines Flight 175 takes off from Boston with 65 people on board, also in route to Los Angeles, California. Twenty minutes after departure, at 8:19 a.m., Flight 11 alert air controllers the plane has been hijacked. 8:46 a.m., hijackers crash American Airlines Flight 11 into the North Tower of the World Trade Center between floors 93-99, killing all on board and hundreds inside the building. From what seemed like an accident, shock waves were sent throughout the city, first responders rushed to the scene and innocent bystanders stood in disbelief, unaware of the events to follow. 9:03 a.m., Hijackers crash United Airlines Flight 175 into floors 75-85 of the World Trade Center’s South Tower. All on board were killed and hundreds more were killed inside the building. It has now become evident that this is attack against America and at 9:08 a.m., FAA bans all takeoff of flights going to New York City. 9:24 a.m., the FAA learns Flight 77 has also been hijacked after passengers and crew on board alert family members. Thirteen minutes later, at 9:37 a.m., Flight 77 crashes into the western façade of Pentagon in Washington, D.C., killing all 59 passengers on board and 125 military and civilian personnel in side the building. 9:42 a.m., FAA grounds all flights over the Continental U.S. It’s the first time such a declaration has been made in the U.S and at 9:45 a.m., The White House and U.S. Capitol building are evacuated. 9:59 a.m., the South Tower of the World Trade Center collapses. Twenty-nine minutes later, at 10:28 a.m., the North Tower of the World Trade Center collapses. Due to a terrorist attack against the United States, 3,000 Americans were killed, thousands more were injured. Mothers and Fathers, Sons and Daughters were ripped from their families. First responders put their lives on the line, rushing into the collapsing towers in efforts to save who they could. On a day in US history that will forever be etched into our minds as a day of pain, agony and disbelief, we shall never forget the heroic acts of those on-board Flight 93. 10:07 a.m., passengers and crew aboard Flight 93 learn about the attacks and realize their plane has been hijacked. Due to their tremendous heroism, they are able to retake the plane and guide it away from the believed intended target, The White House, and crash into a Pennsylvania field, killing all 40 on board. 9/11 numbers • Total number killed in attacks in New York: 2,753 • Number of firefighters and paramedics killed: 343 • Number of NYPD officers: 23 • Number of Port Authority police officers: 37 • Number of employees who died in Tower One: 1,402 • Number of employees who died in Tower Two: 614 • Number of employees lost at the World Trade Center office of Cantor Fitzgerald: 658 • Estimated number of children who lost a parent: 3,051 • Estimated cost of cleanup: $600 million • Total number killed in attacks in New York: 2,753 • Number of firefighters and paramedics killed: 343 • Number of nations whose citizens were killed in attacks: 115 • Number of families who got no remains of their loved ones: 1,717 • Percentage of Americans who knew someone hurt or killed in the attacks: 20 percent • Victims ranged in age from two to 85 years.
