Lu was raised on a small farm on Lake Tebo near Sedalia, Missouri with her sister and brother. On October 28,1950 in Sedalia, Missouri, she was married to Ralph Rider and to this union two children were born. Together they shared 57 years of marriage.
Lu was a charter member of the Camdenton United Methodist Church, where she was a soprano soloist and sang in the choir. She was also the church organist for over 40 years. She was an active member of the United Methodist Women, led the children’s choir, and worked with children in Sunday school and vacation Bible school.
