Phillip Dean Wolverton, age 72, of Macks Creek, passed away September 23 in his home with his family. Dean was born March 16th 1943 in Oswego, Kansas the son of Richard and Marie Wolverton. Dean grew up in the township of Montana, Kansas. He attended the little two room school from 1st to 7th grade. Dean was hired as a care taker of the little country school to mow grass in the summer and bring in wood for heat in the winter, for $5.00 a month. Dean attended 8th grade in the newly constructed school, Service Valley, then attended high school in Altamont Kansas. Mrs. Dora Newbanks, one of the older families of Montana, gave Wednesday evening bible studies and fresh baked cookies for the kids in the area. Dean later contributes these gatherings as the beginning of his Christian walk, accepting Jesus as his Savior and was baptized. At the age of 15, Dean traveled with a harvesting crew thru Western Kansas, Oklahoma and Colorado during wheat harvesting time. As an adult, he worked in various jobs such as a heavy machinery operator for the P&M Coal Mines in South East Kansas and ran a dozer in the same coal mine as Big Brutus, known as the world’s largest shovel of the times. Dean also took supervisor positions in coal mines in Tennessee and Missouri. Dean acquired his pilot’s license, had a farm equipment dealership with his brother Richard Wolverton and was foreman of several dam sights, and worked on various major highway projects over central US and on the pipeline across Northern Missouri before retiring from Operating Engineers Union. Dean married Carolyn Waldren Capps October 21st 1994 in Osage Beach Missouri and spent their 21 years of marriage in Macks Creek Missouri. Dean loved to garden and have quality time with his blended family. And his beloved dogs, Czar and Kaser. He and Carolyn were active members of the First Baptist Church of Macks Creek. He is survived by his wife Carolyn of the home, a daughter Valla Martin and husband Randy of Springfield, Missouri; sons Phillip Wolverton and wife Terrie of Blue Springs, Missouri; Aaron Capps of Macks Creek, Missouri; David Capps and wife Annette of Camdenton, Missouri; James Capps and wife Kim of Camdenton, Missouri; Ben Capps and wife Nancy of Ashland, Missouri; honorary son, Dennis Willey and wife Kathy of Eldon, Missouri., eleven grandchildren and six great grand children. A brother Richard Wolverton and wife Ethel of Moberly Missouri and a sister, Barbara Hoskins of Dennis, KS. Dean is preceded in death by his parents Richard and Marie Wolverton, and an infant daughter Belinda Marie Wolverton. Dean was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and a caring friend to many. Dean has left a legacy rich in laughter and will be dearly missed by all that knew him. Visitation will be held, Saturday, September 26, from 12:00 to 2:00 at the First Baptist Church of Macks. Creek, with services following at 2:00 with Pastor Lyle Mankey officiating. Expressions of sympathy can sent to Allee Holman Howe Funeral Home and in lieu of flowers monetary offerings can be made to the Parrack Grove Cemetery Fund in Macks Creek or the First Baptist Church of Macks Creek.
