Raymond Vaughn Silvers

Raymond Vaughn Silvers departed this life Friday, June 2, 2017, at his home, in Camdenton, Missouri, at the age of eighty-seven. He was born June 29, 1929 in Chariton, Iowa, the son of Vaughn and Darlene Parks Silvers. His parents and a sister, Doris Hall, preceded him in death. On April 22, 1966, Ray was united in marriage to Dorthy Jean Cappel. Together they raised four children. Ray is survived by his wife, Dorthy, of the home; children, Holly Mickelson and husband Joe, of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Craig Silvers and wife Michelle, of Camdenton, Missouri; Marcy Oerly and husband Mark, of California, Missouri; and Katie Brown and husband Jim, of Peculiar, Missouri; grandchildren, Broc and Eric Silvers; John, Matt, and Brian Norris; Rachel and Matt Oerly; Hannah Coovert, Abbi and Zach Brown; four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Ray grew up in Iowa and later moved to Quincy, Illinois where he attended middle school and high school. During his time in Quincy he excelled in football, basketball and was active in Student Government. Ray attended the University of Missouri and was recruited by the legendary coach, Don Faurot. He entered in to the United States Air Force and proudly served during the Korean War. Following his discharge from the service, Ray returned to Clinton, Iowa where he operated a women and children’s clothing store with his mother, and later with his wife, for many years. While living in Clinton, Ray was active in the community; he served as the President of the Lyon’s Business Association, the Chamber of Commerce, and was instrumental in the founding of the Lyon’s Farmers’ Market. Ray and Dorthy retired to the Lake area in 1982. Ray was an avid tennis player and also enjoyed reading, writing, gardening, and spending time with his family. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. A Celebration of Life gathering will be held on July 1, 2017 from 1:00 – 3:00 pm at the home. Friends and family are invited to attend. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
