William John Christian, known affectionately as "Bill" or "Butch," passed away on February 27, 2025, in Osage Beach, Missouri, at the age of 79. Born on April 3, 1945, in Martins Ferry, Ohio, he lived a life full of adventure, craftsmanship, and dedication to those around him.
Bill's career was as varied as it was remarkable.
While working for a utilities company, he had the unique opportunity to meet the legendary John Wayne while servicing his ranch.
A skilled craftsman with an exceptional talent for knife and blade making, Bill created pieces that were both functional and artistic—including the iconic sword used in *Conan the Barbarian*. His craftsmanship was renowned among those who appreciated fine blades.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Bill served as a police officer with the Los Angeles Police Department.
His commitment to service extended beyond law enforcement; he also worked with troubled youth in a correctional capacity, striving to make a difference in their lives.
Later in life, shortly before retiring, he worked at Walmart in Osage Beach, where he continued to connect with people from all walks of life.
Bill had a deep love for fishing—his favorite pastime—and took great pride in building his own fishing gear and crafting lures. Around the Lake of the Ozarks, he earned the nickname "Cast Master" for his incredible ability to cast his fishing line farther than anyone could imagine.
Wrestling was always on his television every Monday and Friday evening, a tradition he never missed.
In his younger years, he was an avid stamp collector with an impressive collection of rare and valuable stamps.
Later in life, he turned his attention to collecting basketball trading cards.
Those who knew Bill will remember him as a man with a big heart and an even bigger personality. He had an undeniable passion for life and people—he could love fiercely but wasn’t afraid to toss someone into the lake if they got on his bad side (a true story that he loved retelling). He was truly one of a kind and will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife, Bonnie Christian; stepdaughters Kristina Ellis, Kerrie Laws, and Kasandra McDaniel; sisters Sandy Elkins and Tammy Dorssom; and brother Russell Christian.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William George Christian and Delores Jean (Vantine) Christian; his brother James Christian; and even his cherished cat Oscar.
A Celebration of Life will be held on April 3, 2025—the day that would have marked Bill’s 80th birthday—from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Ha Ha Tonka State Park in Camdenton, Missouri (1491 State Road D). The gathering will take place at the Ha Ha Tonka Lake Shelter—his favorite fishing spot—just past the Post Office on the opposite side of the road by the lake and docks. A potluck supper will be shared in his honor; fried chicken will be provided, and guests are welcome to bring a side dish. Anyone who knew and loved Bill is warmly invited to attend.
May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.
Arrangements are under the direction of Allee-Holman-Howe Funeral Home.
